Amy & Dave Freeman

On August 24th, 2014, Amy and Dave Freeman embarked on their first Adventure Advocacy campaign, a 2,000-mile journey from Ely, MN to Washington, D.C. They paddled the “Sig,” a 20-ft Wenonah canoe named after Sigurd Olson, a legend in the history of Wilderness preservation. The Freemans’ journey included 1,400 miles of paddling and 600 miles of sailing as they traveled through the Boundary Waters and across the Great Lakes, before making their way through Lake Champlain and the Chesapeake Bay to arrive in D.C. on December 2, 2014.

On September 23rd, 2015, Amy and Dave set off on their second Adventure Advocacy campaign: A Year in the Wilderness. After entering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the 23rd, they did not leave for 365 consecutive days in protest of the proposed Twin Metals copper mine. Throughout their Year in the Wilderness, Amy and Dave stayed at 120 different campsites and traveled more than 3,000 miles by canoe, foot, ski, snowshoe, and dog team. This â€‹year will be the 10th anniversary of their exit from the Wilderness.

On April 20th, 2018, Amy and Dave launched their third Adventure Advocacy campaign. Pedal to D.C. was a 2-month, 2,000-mile bike journey, where they towed a canoe from Ely to Washington, D.C. On this journey, they brought their recently-published book, A Year in the Wilderness, which detailed their previous campaign. Along their route, they stopped in at local bookstores and other venues to share their adventures and book with new audiences.

Now, Amy and Dave are setting out on another Adventure Advocacy campaign. Pedal to the Polls is their most recent campaign to protect the Boundary Waters from toxic copper mining- this time through electoral outreach. Join them this election season across Minnesota as they host events and door knocks in your area!
